I actually started writing this back in May, but then I fell into a depression hole and struggled to write over the summer. But I'm doing better now and pleased that this is finally out.

Summary:

After what happened at Guanyin Temple, Lan Sizhui, Lan Jingyi, Ouyang Zizhen and Jing Ling part ways, but they continue to stay in touch via letters. They slowly reevaluate the stories they were told about the past, and figure what that might mean for their own futures. Along the way they solve some mysteries, catalogue some treasure, interfere with their seniors’ feelings, and eat a lot of food, not necessarily in that order.

I'm really proud of this fic! It's my longest one yet, and it features four letter writers, all of whom I tried to give distinct voices. There's lots of food, and festivals and ordinary life, but also some plot, and I'm pleased with how well it hangs together

This complete but I'm posting it in chapters. Expect a new chapter every 3-5 days, and I'll post again when it's complete!

This the longest fic I've written so far and I'm proud of it! It was challenge to write a four way epistolary story but I think it came out ok in the end.

I think I've mentioned that I'm part of an informal writing group where we read each others work and talk about our stories. It's so much fun and major motivation for me to keep writing fic. Last week two stories by members of the group where published! I love both immensely.

Summary:

Letters Wei Wuxian sends to Lan Wangji while he is traveling

The working title for this one was "WWX does Taran Wanderer" I also considered calling it "Set Out as You Choose" which a quote form that book, but it seemed a little bit grand and misleading. "Seven Cups of Tea" is the title of well know Chinese poem about tea so that seemed like a fun reference.

I mentioned that I was reading Tea in China by James A. Benn -- a lot of little details form that book ended up in this fic! (That's also how I learned about the poem) It was fun to do research for this fic, but I tried not to let myself get too worried about historical realism because the source material clearly doesn't care.

Finally I'm not really sure about the character tags on this. I asked for general advice and got told "tag characters if they are important to the plot" and also "if the character is tagged someone reading just for that character shouldn't be disappointed" and those are both kinda subjective measures. And the plot is kind of meandering and episodic. So that the moment I've tagged the characters that felt I had something to say about and have not tagged other characters who I have fewer feelings about. But I don't know I might go back and tag the rest. If you have thoughts either on when one should tag characters in general or who in specif in this story I should tag let me know.

Wei Wuxian playing Chenqing, fey and dangerous, like a figure from a myth. Horrors and death and Hanguang-jun standing under a paper umbrella. She can hear the echoes too: screams from the sect overseers and from her own people mingled. Her desperate shouting. And the unearthly music of the flute.

Now they are in the Burial Mounds. The dirt here is fine as ash and dry as bone. Clouds of resentful energy swirl through the eerie forest. When they arrived, terrified and exhausted, they crept in through the trees like ghosts. But she lives, and so does A-Ning. And Wei Wuxian promised to heal him.

Welcome to five fandom 5+1s and a meme! This is a series of posts about stuff that’s important to my own personal fandom history. I wanted some space to talk about happy and whimsical stuff and explore the different ways I’ve experienced fandom over time. I thought it would be fun to borrow the popular fanfic structure of 5+1 things. I’m using the word fandom very broadly here, to include SFF book fandom, transformative fandom, and just liking things. The things I’ve picked to talk about might not be the best or my favorites but they are fundamental to my experience and have shaped my thinking.

This the final post of this series, and that means it's time for a meme! I’ve been seeing this meme around for a while now, but have hesitated to do it because I’m fairly new to fic and I’m still gettng the hang of which of these tropes I’m seeing when I read.-.. But it looked like so much fun, and so when I needed a meme for this project, I couldn’t resist!

Slow burn OR love at first sight -- Slow burn! One thing I really enjoy in romances is the characters coming to know each other as people. It's a great way for the reader to also learn about them, and just enjoy the ride of watching the relationship form. Besides, love at first sight just seems very unrealistic to me.

Fake dating OR secret dating -- I don’t think I’ve read any secret dating, so I guess fake dating, which is often fun but sometimes feels a bit contrived.

Enemies to lovers OR best friends to lovers -- I really enjoy the kind of enemies to lovers where neither character is in the wrong but they have reasonable reasons to dislike each other and over the course of the story they slowly learn to see past that and fall in love. I just find romances that are about learning to see the other person more fully super satisfying. I do enjoy friends to lovers as well, but it starts from a point where the characters already know each other, so even though friends to lovers seems ideal for non-fictional relationship, when I’m reading, I definitely prefer enemies to lovers.

Oh no, there's only one bed OR long distance with correspondence Definitely long distance with correspondence. There’s only one bed isn’t a trope that I have strong feelings about one way or another, but I love epistolary fiction, fanfic or otherwise. I really enjoy the characters with a distinct narrative voice, and letter writing is one way of achieving that. Plus epistolary stories can play with narrative distance in interesting ways. No all long distance correspondence stories are epistolary but they do tend to at least feature snippets of the correspondence.

Fantasy AU OR modern AU I don’t have strong feelings about this one. I generally am more interested in fantasy than in contemporary fiction but I haven’t really read very many fansty AUs and I’ve read a lot of modern AUs, which might just be because I tend to start from canons with magical elements. Also these two don’t have to be mutually exclusive! I quite enjoy modern with magic AUs!

Smut OR fluff Oh, fluff definitely. I like smut sometimes but I need to be in the right state of mind for it. On the other hand I'm a voracious reader of fluff.

Mutual pining OR domestic bliss I think both of these are fine in moderation. Mutual pining can reach a point where I just want to yell, “Communicate, dammit!” at the piners, but as long as it doesn’t get too stretched out, I enjoy a mutual pining story. Domestic bliss is also good in small to moderate doses, but eventually I tend to want something else to happen.

Alternate universe OR future fic I enjoy both of these and don’t really have preference here.

One shot OR multi-chapter -I’ve had to stop reading WIPs. I enjoyed reading them at first but after a while I just couldn’t keep track of multiple stories that didn’t update very often. So now I just wait for things to be complete. The best fic length for me is novella length, 20-40k- it’s long enough to sink my teeth into, but short enough that I don’t feel overwhelmed by how long it is. I don’t really care if those words are in chapters or one shots, because I’m going to read them all at once anyway.

Kid fic OR road trip fic -- So I have complicated feelings about kid fic. I read it sometimes and enjoy it, kidfic is often fun and cute. But I want things that this trope doesn’t deliver. I want stories that resonate with my experience of being a parent, the cute fun things yes, but also the gross things, the dull things, the frustrating things, andI rarely see those in stories. Also, while I I want stories about moms, because let's face it in our society parenting is really a very gendered experience, almost all of the kid fic that I’ve read has been about dads, which is partially because fandom can be very m/m centric and partially because I haven’t made a huge effort to get outside m/m focused spaces. While I have read some great fic about moms, most of that isn’t what I’d call kid fic. In the end, kid fic as a trope tends be be a bit frustrating to me because it is very close to some things that I want to see more of in fiction but it doesn’t end up actually being those things.

I haven’t read a lot of road trip fic, I do tend to enjoy travel stories in fiction. It’s a good reason for forced proximity, and it generally involves getting to see more parts of the world which I enjoy. So, Given my complicated feelings about kidfic, I guess I’m going with road trip fic!

Reincarnation OR character death -- I don’t really like either of these. Characters dying is just very upsetting. And I find reincarnation where the characters remember their past lives, especially as children creepy. However I really don’t want my faves to die and stay dead so I’m going with reincarnation.

Arranged marriage OR accidental marriage I had to think about this one for a bit but the evidence suggests arranged marriage, since I’ve read far more of that. I’m not sure what about arranged marriage is appealing to me. Maybe it's that these stories are more likely to engage with the wider political context?

Time travel OR isolated together I enjoy time travel generally, I like time paradoxes, and stories where time travel is twisting your brain around strange loops and you have to pluze through. But most time travel fic I’ve come across isn’t like that. The most common thing I’ve seen is time travel fix its where someone from the end of the story goes back to an earlier point in the story and fixes everything. I just don’t find “How would I change things I if knew what was going to happen?” to be very compelling question, especially since a lot of these stories aren’t interested in time travel paradoxes. On the other hand I feel pretty neutral about isolated together, so I’m going to pick time travel since I like it some of the time.

Neighbors OR roommates These seem very similar. I guess neighbors because then each character has a home that can be described and I enjoy when people use descriptions of someone’s physical space to illustrate their character.

Sci-fi AU OR magic AU Another one I don’t have strong feelings about. I enjoy both!

Bodyswap OR genderbend So I have complicated feelings about genderbending and specifically “Always a different gender” AUs. I know they’re frequently used to increase the number of female characters, and I very much support having more female characters, but reading them is super confusing for me, because I tend to feel that if those characters had always been a different gender, then they would be very different people, and I haven’t read any genderbending stories that really explore that, though I know there are some out there.

Bodyswap is something that I think would be super awkward if it happened for real, but I don’t have strong feelings about it in fic.

Angst OR crack Hmm.. so I’m not someone who enjoys angst for the sake of it, or stories where the angst is unrelenting, but a bit of angst can be a very good story ingredient. My understanding of “crack” is that it means so kind of over the top very silly premise, though I’m still a bit vague on what exactly it is. Despite my lack of experience with crack, I do tend to enjoy over the top silliness. And I also enjoy crack treated seriously, when things that should be unbelievable somehow really work. So, after consideration, crack.

Apocalyptic OR mundane I don’t love mundane things, but really dislike apocalyptic things so mundane.

And that’s the end of Five Fandom 5+1s and a Meme! Thanks for reading along, and thanks to Anna K. for helping me brainstorm for this series and editing these posts!
forestofglory: Cup of tea on a pile of books (books)
Floodtide by Heather Rose Jones This the most recent book in the Alpennia series and I think I would have enjoyed it a little bit more if I had reread the rest of the series first. However this book stands alone quite well, being about the below stairs world of the characters from the other books. For the most part it was a nice gentle coming of age story, with bit higher stakes at the end and I enjoyed it very much. (Content notes: ableism, plague)

Tea in China: A Religious and Cultural History by James A. Benn-- I thought I’d like to write some fic featuring a lot of tea drinking. So I started doing a little bit of research, and then I fell down a rabbit hole, and ended up buying this book. So far I’m loving it! It’s full of all kinds of interesting details about daily life and religion that I really enjoy learning about.(And while I haven't used it in fic yet, someone else did!)

Finna by Nino Cipri -- This novella about queer exes investigating a wormhole in the IKEA like store were they work was lot of fun! And it also is excellent at depicting dealing with anxiety and the daily grind of retail work.

The Strange Case of Starship Iris MINI EPISODE 1: Airplay -- This great science fiction podcast is currently between seasons but they released this mini episode, which was delightful. I smiled the whole way through. It was so nice to spend a bit more time with these characters!

Check, Please! Books 1 and 2 by by Ngozi Ukazu I’d read most of this delighful comic about hockey and baking, with a gay main character online, but I’d some how never gotten around to the last few comics. Anyways it was lovely to read it all in one go, and the ending was so sweet and made me tear up a little bit!

The White Road: Journey Into an Obsession by Edmund de Waal This book is hard to explain. It's a memoir and also a history of porcelain in Europe. It’s fascinating and beautifully written. However sometimes it can feel a bit othering towards groups the author doesn’t belong to. Also towards the end it took an expected turn into Nazis. Still I enjoyed it a lot and it made me want to go throw some pots or at least look at some porcelain.

Star Trek: Voyager We are now well into season 6. Since we aren’t watching all the episodes we have about 20 or so left that we are planning to watch. So we are getting somewhat close to the end.

forestofglory: A-Yuan from The Untamed holding a toy sword (A-Yuan)
I finished a draft of the fic I posted a snippet of last week, but its so short that there's not really a good new snippet to share.

But I like posting on Sunday to muse about writing so here are some things I've been thinking about. I've love to hear any thoughts you might have on these matters.

What makes prose good? Like on the sentence level? I've become more aware of the prose in the fic that I read since I started writing it. I've noticed that I like some of it better, and find some of it easier to read, but I can't really identify what traits make me enjoy prose.

I've been thinking about the difference between writing non-fiction and fiction and they are actually surprisingly similar, which confuses me. One thing that is different though is that I have to think lot harder about how much to say between the words. With non-fiction i have learned that if I haven't said something in so many words people won't know that I thought it. But with fic its harder. For example in fic form close third POV sometimes have very clear ideas exactly what the other characters are thinking but of course I can't just come out and say it.

I guess that's food for thought.
forestofglory: Cup of tea on a pile of books (books)
Star Trek: Voyager-- We have finished season 3 and watched the first episode of season four which means lots of Borg, and I’ve kinda met Seven of Nine! There was a great episode where Tuvok and Tom Paris where trying to write a holo-novel together and Tuvok quotes some Vulcan poetics! Now I really want some fic about Vulcan poetics -- if you know of any please send it my way.

Moontangled by Stephanie Burgis I love The Harwood Spellbook series of fantasy novellas of which is the most recent installment, and went the author was offering ARC’s on twitter I jumped at the chance! This was delightful as expected, I will have a longer review after this comes out which will be sometime in February.

I Love You So Mochi by Sarah Kuhn This was a YA novel about an Japanese American girl who visits Japan for spring break. Its really cute and has wonderful descriptions of food and clothing. The main character is searching for a vocation in the story and as a person who would like to have a vocation but doesn’t really I found this theme a bit hard to deal with. But I still enjoyed the book. I also appreciated that the main character’s mom is not dead and that their mother/daughter relationship plays an important role in the book.

Yuletide 2019 I read a lot of fanfic posted as part of this annual small fandoms exchange. There was quite a lot of fic for my Chinese drama fandoms and also many fics based on books I enjoyed. Here are a some of recs:

”A Series of Discoveries” by genarti
(Sorcerer to the Crown) a very cute take on Rollo’s backstory

”Be Bold, but not Too Bold” by meguri_aite
(In Other Lands), the summary of this is pretty prefect “A dragon appears in the Borderlands, and Elliot Schafer makes it his first order of business to get kidnapped by it.”

”Situation Normal” (Murderbot) Murderbot goes to a scientific conference and mets ART again.

”The Past Didn't Go Anywhere” by FairestCat (The Untamed) A wonderful Wen Qing Lives fic

”Fire in the Blood” by Jo Lasalle (The Untamed) I enjoyed not knowing more than the tags going into this fic so I’m just going to say that this gave me a lot of feelings.

Get You A Man Who Can Do Both by marycrawford (Guardian) A very cute Da Qing POV midcanon.

“Ring the Bells (That Still Can Ring)” by Shadaras (The Untamed) Another Wen Qing centric fic (I love her, ok?) also featuring some very excellent Jiang Yanli

The Witch Boy, The Hidden Witch, and Midwinter Witch by Molly Ostertag -- the first two where rereads. These middle grade graphic novels about a boy who wants to do girls magic and his family and friends are so good! I especially enjoyed the complicated family politics in the last volume. And I love that one of his friends has two dads and it's not an issue at all. The art here is lovely and colorful. I just really loved these!
forestofglory: Cup of tea on a pile of books (books)
I haven’t been consuming a lot of new media the last few weeks so this will be a shortish update. I’ve been very slowly rewatching The Untamed and reading a lot of fanfic, also mostly Untamed, but also several other Chinese source canons, and some Yuletide fic though I haven’t really dug into that collection yet. I don’t usually include fic in these round ups because the transformative fandom norms for talking about that are pretty different than the book fandom norms and I’m still figuring that out. But if you are curious about some of the things I’ve been reading I’ve started a thread on twitter with recs for lady-centric Untamed/MDZS fic.

Star Trek: Voyager We are now somewhere in the middle of season three. I’m still enjoying this but several episodes recently have been hard to watch because they hit my embarrassment squick. Tom Paris has been given several opportunities to be a pushy jerk in recent episodes, but instead has respected other people’s boundaries, so that’s been lovely. I think I like Janeway’s new hair but I enjoyed the way the updo could fall down in a disaster.

The Living Dead This is spin off movie of The Untamed featuring two of my favorite side character having an adventure together. This was ok, but very confusing. Also a lot of it was very dark in a literal sense. So it was hard to see and that didn’t help the confusion. I wanted a bit more interaction between the two characters. Still there where some fun fight scenes, and some nice teamwork.

Sisters of the Vast Black by Lina Rather This is a science fiction novella about catholic nuns living on a living spaceship. I enjoyed it but the worldbuilding felt like a lot of details that didn’t quite go together and that was a bit frustrating. However I really enjoy the religion in space bits and the ways the nuns worked together as a community.

Descending Stories: Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju Vol. 8-10 by Haruko Kumota I finished this! I don’t have a lot to add to what I’ve said about this before. Basically this great story about intergenerational relationships and being an artist. It had a very satisfying ending. (Content note: death, grief)

Summary:

She halfway down the street still running before it occurs the Wen Qing to worry that the cultivators might recognize her. She’s been living in Yiling for thirteen years and never seen anyone from her old life. Well, if someone is hurt she has to help. It's been a long time and she looks different now.

Recently there’s been another spate of rumors about the cultivation world, something about another siege and the burial mounds and a strange temple in Yunmeng. But there’s always rumours about the Yiling Patriarch’s return, sometimes like now they feature her brother as well, but she’s learned not to pay attention -- it's never anything real. Her family is dead, but she has made a new life for herself here. A life where she heals people.

As mentioned before this was lot of fun to write. This is drama based fic but you could probably read it you've only read/watched other canons. Here's a couple of spoilery differences between drama canon and book canon if you want give a try. spoilers )

I have vague thoughts about writing a sequel but not currently enough plot inspiration to write it, even though I have some ideas for character beats. So I guess I'll guess see if inspiration hits or not. I'm still very new at this and don't really understand my fic writing process.

WIPs?

SO I'm still pretty new at transformative works fandom. So one thing I've been trying to figure out recently is works in progress(WIP). Its common for people to post stories on AO3 one chapter at a time. Either because the work is still being written or sometimes because the want to serialize it.

At first I was like well I'm really bad at serialized work, I don't even watch TV as its airing. But then I was tempted by something that wasn't finished. So I started reading along, and actually it was fun to wait and also to have the whole social thing with people commenting on each chapter. So now I sometimes read WIPs.

I'm trying to develop some guidelines for WIP reading for myself. Here's what I have so far:

I'm far more likely to start a WIP if I know the author a bit or if people I know are talking about the WIP

If I find a WIP that already has big chunk posted I'll probably wait until its done rather than get caught up and then follow along.

I'm trying not to read too many at once. How many is too many? Maybe 4?

I don't always go off and read the next chapter of WIP as soon as it lands in my inbox. I did this for a bit and it was too stressful.

Those are my personal guidelines at the moment. Things have been evolving though so this very subject to change.

Do you read WIPs? What kinds of personal guidelines do you have for them? How do you kept track of new chapters?

Stacking the Stories Reading
I’m so glad I decided to focus on reading short fiction! I’ve mostly been reading The Trans Space Octopus Congregation: Stories by Bogi Takács, since I got an ARC from the author. It comes out July 8 so I will hopefully finish it and write a proper review of it around then. I also have read a couple of online stories. The standout of these is ”Boiled Bones and Black Eggs” by Nghi Vo

Mom fic I read a couple more fics featuring moms. Here are two I’d recommend:
Calling to the wind by Leaf Litter -- An Earthsea fic about Tenar and Apple’s relationship.
#101: "An Inevitable Conclusion; But With Makeouts" by Raven This Murderbot fic features Dr Mensah watching Rise and Fall of Sanctuary Moon with her daughter and has lots of lovely Mom/Daugher media discussion.

The Strange Case of Starship Iris eps 1-3 This fiction podcast, and the 1st time I’ve listened to such a thing. (I generally go for non-fiction podcasts instead.) It’s like a radio play with different voices for character and sound effects. The characters feel very contemporary like people from the modern day US but in space. Nonetheless I really like then and enjoy their interactions. There's banter. Plus I want to learn more about the mystery.

Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me by Mariko Tamaki and Rosemary Valero-O'Connell YA graphic novel. This was cute but very teen drama which is something I haven’t really been enjoying reading about recently.

Nirvana in Fire eps 10-13 Most of these episodes passed the Bechdel test. We got to see the scheming moms so more -- they are so much fun. And Mu Nihuang had very intense emotional moment which gave me a lot of feelings. There has been much scheming and discussion of morality all of which is excellent. Plus have mentioned how much I enjoy the costuming in this drama? Everyone wears such pretty things.

The 5th gender by G.L. Carriger This is science fiction m/m human alien romance with a mystery. This didn’t quite work for me. The romance went straight to commitment in a way that didn’t leave a lot of room for character development, and the mystery was interesting but didn’t really get started until halfway through the book. And If I think too hard about the biology I have a lot of questions. Also this another science fiction universe that inexplicably does not have artificial wombs. The best bit of this book is at the beginning when our Alien mc is baffled by a cat. I was telling some friends about this and one of them said “Alien baffled by a cat” should be troupe name. So if you would like to use “Alien baffled by cat” for all your non-humans baffled by human culture go right ahead. spoilery content notes )

Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe Graphic Memoir. This was a mix of things that felt really familiar and things that felt very unfamiliar. The author is a bit younger than I am but we both grew up in Northern California and have some of the same cultural reference points, like Tamora Pierce’s Alanna books and The Last Herald-Mage. And e did high school theater and read a lot as teen. But then e’s experience with eir gender is not like my experience with my gender. And the juxtaposition left me feeling a bit off balance -- in a good way but I need to process my reaction a bit more.

Onibi: Diary of a Yokai Ghost Hunter by Cécile Brun and Olivier Pichard This is a French comic about Japan translated into English. So very transnational. Anyways it was cute and I liked a lot of the art though some of the people were drawn in a way that looked close to racist caricature to my American eyes. But the landscapes where very nice.
