New Post at Lady Business!
Oct. 22nd, 2020 10:07 amI actually started writing this back in May, but then I fell into a depression hole and struggled to write over the summer. But I'm doing better now and pleased that this is finally out.
After what happened at Guanyin Temple, Lan Sizhui, Lan Jingyi, Ouyang Zizhen and Jing Ling part ways, but they continue to stay in touch via letters. They slowly reevaluate the stories they were told about the past, and figure what that might mean for their own futures. Along the way they solve some mysteries, catalogue some treasure, interfere with their seniors’ feelings, and eat a lot of food, not necessarily in that order.

It’s on one of the days when he feels just a little restless that Wei Wuxian comes up with a plan. He has been reflecting on his sweet Sizhui and that has led him naturally to his stormy nephew. Jin Ling, Wei Wuxian thinks, does not know how to enjoy life. Jin Ling has been raised by a duplicitous snake and a purple thunderstorm. Jin Ling needs him, the best Dajiu, to save him from himself.
Or: Wei Wuxian attempts to teach Jin Ling about the finer things in life, with mixed results.
It’s all well and good to, on the spur of the moment, in driving rain, in the middle of the night, romantically run away with man you love—because of course he loves Wei Wuxian, though he hasn’t said it aloud yet—on a noble quest to rescue and preserve the survivors of an atrocity, but at some point you have to consider the logistics of that preservation.
Letters Wei Wuxian sends to Lan Wangji while he is traveling
What if Mo Xuanyu's spell had some unexpected ripples? (Aka, I love Lan Yi and wanted to give her a second chance.)
When Wen Qing closes her eyes, she can see flashes from the night before. Rain and lightning and clouds of resentful energy. The huddled pool of A-Ning’s body. Wei Wuxian playing Chenqing, fey and dangerous, like a figure from a myth. Horrors and death and Hanguang-jun standing under a paper umbrella. She can hear the echoes too: screams from the sect overseers and from her own people mingled. Her desperate shouting. And the unearthly music of the flute.
Now they are in the Burial Mounds. The dirt here is fine as ash and dry as bone. Clouds of resentful energy swirl through the eerie forest. When they arrived, terrified and exhausted, they crept in through the trees like ghosts. But she lives, and so does A-Ning. And Wei Wuxian promised to heal him.
As Wen Qing sits down, Jiang Wanyin says, “Jin Ling asked me to bring you to Koi Tower. There’s a banquet commemorating the end of the Sunshot Campaign to be held there, and he wants us both to attend.”
Jin Ling asks Lan Sizhui to come to Qiongqi Path and play Inquiry so he can learn the truth of what happened to the Wen held prisoner there.

She halfway down the street still running before it occurs the Wen Qing to worry that the cultivators might recognize her. She’s been living in Yiling for thirteen years and never seen anyone from her old life. Well, if someone is hurt she has to help. It's been a long time and she looks different now.
