This list is for all of you who said "I'd like cozy SFF, if it was the thing you talked about"

I have a new post out at [community profile] ladybusiness "Adventures with Crossdressing Sword Girls" where I talk about some of the crossdressing girl media I've been watching recently and a bit about why I like this trope so much. Come tell me about your favorite crossdressing girl media!

I posted another translation from Classical Chinese. This one has dragons, and a traveling kitchen and other cool stuff!

For the first time I'm offering to create something for the Fandom Trumps Hate charity auction! I'm offering to create an annotated bibliography related to Chinese history. If you ever wished I would go down a research rabbit hole and tell you about it now is your chance!

See more here
forestofglory: Cup of tea on a pile of books (books)
I’m putting together an offer of an Annotated Bibliography for Fandom Trumps Hate and they suggest putting together some examples. I don’t have an example of exactly the type of thing I’m offering but here are a couple of things that are close.

Annotated Bibliography for Harmonious Kinship
This annotated bibliography I wrote for my most recent fic is the closest to what I’m proposing for FTH. This is the format I would use for the single subject bibliography that I’m offering to create, with an introduction and then each item in bold with notes afterwards.

Chinese History Starter Pack
This is a rec list of academic works about Chinese history that can be read with little or no background.

Worldbuilders Book Club Rec List
The Worldbuilders Book Club was a year-long challenge to read non-fiction in 12 different categories.. This the rec list I put together for that challenge with books in each category

I’m including both of these as examples of my writing about non-fiction.
forestofglory: A hand writing in Elvish (Writing)
2024 was another mixed writing year. I continued to struggle with hand pain (it’s getting better but slowly) and various issues that made it hard to focus but I posted some things I’m proud of.

As well as contributing to various group posts I wrote two long piece for Lady Business:

On Cozy SFF

This started out as a passionate defense of cosy SFF but then I realized that I don’t actually like a lot of stuff that gets labeled cozy. But I still have a lot of thoughts about the subgenre. This piece had an amazing reception! The comments on the post are so good and thoughtful, plus it got linked to in several other places and even inspired a panel at a con!

Chinese History Starter Pack
https://ladybusiness.dreamwidth.org/370188.html

I wrote this for the people who ask me where to start reading more about Chinese history! This rec list includes both books and papers with a little bit about why each one is worth reading and why it could be a good starting place.

For the third year in a row I recced a thing every day in December. This has been such a fun tradition I'm glad started doing it. All my recs from this year and previous years can be found under my #DecRecs tag.

I'm super proud of my first posted translation for classical Chinese: Wei Furen! This is the culmination of years of study, and I learned so much working on it. Not only language skills but also a lot about historical Daoism. I’m hoping to post some more translations on [personal profile] foreststudio this year.

I also posted what turned out to be the longest fic I’ve written, and separate annotated bibliography – the end notes just got way too long

An Annotated Bibliography for my fic Harmonious Kinship. I list the sources I used for research and talk a little bit about each one.

This doesn’t contain any spoilers for either The Long Ballad or my fic (unless you consider historical events to be spoilers) so it should be readable for people who are just curious about my research process.

Not sure what's next for me in writing I'm currently taking an indefinite break from writing fic, but I do have translation that I just need to read through one more time before I send it to beta, and I'm toying with some ideas for another long post for Lady Business.

13)Today I'm reccing and old favorite and a comfort re-read for me: "The Witches of Athens" by Lara Elena Donnelly
cozy fantasy form before cozy fantasy was a thing. Featuring sisterhood, coffee shops and queer romance. 3k words

14) For #DecRecs today I'm reccing Cayote Brush Studios, for all your California plants and critter art needs!
I recently got a new laptop and I ordered a bunch of stickers from them. They also do prints, posters, washi tape, and other things!

I love the selection of species, things aren't super well known and not frequently depicted in art but that still feel iconic!

They also have some pride merch!
https://coyotebrushstudios.com/

15)Today's #DecRecs is a series of short documentaries Conserving Vulture Peak by the British Museum

About conserving an embroidered tapestry for Dunghuang. There's cool stuff like dye analysis, too! There's 8 videos each less than 10 minutes long: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0LQM0SAx602PTJ1OHYsMnIybgkbNfPpv

16)Today I'm feeling very tired and struggling to come up with something for #DecRecs but past me has my back , because I've written a bunch of rec lists. So today I'm re-sharing “The Joy of Artifact Fanfic: a Rec List”
So enjoy some fic composted of letters, forum posts, twitter threads and other documents

10) For #DecRecs today I want to rec sticky rice pu'erh! One of of my favorite and frequently drunk teas!
It's pu'erh made with an herb called Nuo Mi Xiang (糯米香) -- which translates to sticky rice stent. It gives the deep earthiness of the pu'erh a bit of brightness and sweetness.
The one I'm drinking right now is this https://yunnansourcing.com/products/rice-scent-and-ripe-pu-erh-tea-mini-bricks? but I've tried several different versions and they've all been great!

11)Today's #DecRecs is The Women Who Ruled China: Buddhism, Multiculturalism, and Governance in the Sixth Century by Stephanie Balkwill, a really fascinating book about Empress Dowager Ling of the Northern Wei, women and power during her lifetime and the ways traditional historiography has failed women.

It's open access and you can get an ebook for free here: https://www.ucpress.edu/books/the-women-who-ruled-china/paper

12)Today is the 12th day of #DecRecs and I'm reccing Twig + Tale sewing patterns!

I just think that their patterns are so cute and comfy! I love their commitment to gender neutral language for their patterns, especially because some crafting spaces are very conservative. And I think all the different animal designs are just so much fun!

I haven't made all of their patterns but the ones I have made have been great, and I've made those repeatedly

I've been very slowly mentioning this fic in various online places, because 1) self promotion sucks, and 2)this fic is less polished than what I usually post and I'm a bit ashamed about it. I've been working on it on and off for over a year, slogging through bad hands, a sometimes bad brain, and I am just ready to be done with it. So I finished the draft and I had it SPAGed (You do not want to try to read my work without copy-editing) and posted it.

I did do a lot of research for this fic so I'm working on an Annotated Bibliography which is pretty fun. I'm trying to make it readable to people who aren't into The Long Ballad and haven't read the fic because I think there's few of you who are interested in my research and such even if you aren't in the fandom.

After this I'm planning to take a break from fic writing and focus more on translation which I'm enjoying more than writing.

As some of you will remember I've been studying classical Chinese for a couple of years now, first on my own and now with a tutor. I've started [personal profile] foreststudio to post some of the things we've been translating, and I just posted the first translation Wei Furen a "biography" of the Daoist Transcendent Wei Huacun. I worked hard on this and also learned a lot in the process!

Today at [community profile] ladybusiness I posted Chinese History Starter Pack with lots of recs for cool books and papers to read if you are interested in Chinese history but don't have a lot of background knowledge.

It was nice to take a break for writing my fic WIP which has been a struggle in multiple ways, and work on this which came to me pretty easily. (Now to avoid working on my fic I'm writing an annotated bibliography for it)

Yesterday was [personal profile] katzenfabrik's birthday and in celebration ve did a fic commentary meme and asked vir friends to play too.

The meme is
Let's play a game: pick one of my fics (or a chapter/paragraph/line of one of my fics, as you like) and I'll write you a dvd commentary on what I was thinking when I wrote it

So far I've been asked about two fics and I wanted to save what I wrote somewhere more permanent feeling than Mastodon

End Racism in the OTW | Desk Tour: Dr. Jiang Yanli )

If you'd like to ask me about another fic of mine I'd be happy to rammble on for a bit.

Last weekend at ReaderCon there was a panel inspired by my post about cozy SFF! [personal profile] kate_nepveu took excellent notes.

I also recommend checking out the rest of Kate's panel notes I'm still reading my way through all of them, but so far I have especially enjoyed Fantasies of Political Inagency and The Novels of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu.

Check out my latest post on Lady Business:On Cozy Short SFF

I started writing this nearly a year ago, then put it aside for a while. A couple of months ago I looked at it again and did some revisions, and got some feedback from a friend, then I sat on it some more, trying to decide if I wanted to make even more edits. Today I decided that the prefect is the enemy of done and just went ahead and finally posted it!

Fandomtrees gifts where revealed on Thursday

I made two gifts a cosy fantasy rec list and a CQL ficlet

I received two sets of amazing inkstone icons! And some lovely fanart of the first fic I ever wrote.

This was a really fun event!
forestofglory: A hand writing in Elvish (Writing)
2023 was a mixed year for my writing. I posted more at [community profile] ladybusiness than ever before! But I didn’t post much fic. I struggled a lot with hand pain and was sick for a long time, both of which had a negative impact on my ability to write. Here’s an overview of what I did write!

At the start of the year I organized a group post at [community profile] ladybusiness of our favorite short fiction of 2022

In 2023 I set a goal of writing a rec list every month. And I mostly succeeded, missing one month due to illness and one month just cause. I rounded up all those rec lists here. For December instead of writing a rec list I posted a rec a day for DecRecs, which you can find at my #DecRecs tag

I also wrote a little bit of fic in 2023, posting a total of 3,238 words on ao3 over three fics, one co-written.

While it wasn’t a productive year in terms of word count, each fic was part of a new thing I tried this year: an exchange, co-writing and writing a drabble. Here are the three fics:

In 2024 I want to be better at contributing to group posts at [community profile] ladybusiness so I'm making it a goal to contribute at least once a month.

I'm also setting myself a goal of finishing and posting at least one fic over 1k.
And my stretch goal is to write something for a fandom event.

Hopefully a few small goals will help motivate me, but not be overwhelming
forestofglory: Zhao Yunlan offering Shen Wei meat on a stick (吃吧 (chi ba) and is an offer of food, something like "eat this, please.") (feeding people)
This year I tried to post a rec list every month. And I mostly succeeded. I was sick in June and November got away form me. But I've posted a rec list for all the other months. For December instead of posting a rec list I'm going to be posting a rec every day for #DecRecs (Recs will be posted on Mastodon where I am Forestofglory@wandering.shop and then rounded up every week or so here). So I thought I'd post a round up of all the rec lists:

January: Worldbuilders Book Club Rec List
February: Middle Grade and Young Adult Graphic Novel Rec List
March: Short Unique Fic: A Mulit-Fandom Rec List
April:The Joy of Artifact Fanfic: a Rec List
May: This Made me Think: A Rec list of Critical Essays
July: Those Who Came Before: a Rec List of Fic About the Older Generations of Women in the Untamed
August:Recent Nonfiction Highlights
September: The Long Ballad ( 长歌行) Fanworks Recs
October: Rec List: Chinese Modern Dance Videos
forestofglory: A green pony with a braided mane and tail and tree cutie mark (Lady Business)
I was feeling uninspired to write a rec list this month and was planning to skip it this month. But then yesterday I though I've been watching a lot of cool Chinese modern dance videos, and I want to tell people about them. So clearly I needed to write a rec list. So here it is Rec List: Chinese Modern Dance Videos

Also today I have finally reached a goal that I've been working towards for a long time! I know 1000 characters in Skitter!
forestofglory: E. H. Shepard drawing of Christopher Robin and Pooh floating in a upturned umbrella , with the word Ahoy in the corner (The Brain of Pooh)
This month I bring you a rec list of Long Ballad fanworks! With it a little intro explaining what the show is about and why I like it so much
