One of my friends who lives in the UK is going to be in San Diego for a work trip. I'm going to fly down for a day a see and see her in person! So I thought I'd ask here if anyone has advice for things to do in San Diego?

Seconding San Diego Zoo for anyone at all interested in animals (but it's enormous, and really an all day outing, I think, to get your money's worth). And Balboa Park is very nice in general. When we visited, we skipped the museums but enjoyed the assorted gardens inside the park (cacti! roses! -- well, depending on the season, for the latter) and mosaic fountains and just strolling around.

There's also a neat Maritime Museum, which occupies several ships of various vintage (from a Age of Sail ship to a research sub, with a bunch of stuff in-between), which was a nice thing to do while enjoying the shoreline. We ended up tourind the aircraft carrier nearby as well, but I wouldn't go do that on my own (my husband seemed to really enjoy it, though.)

Oh, and if you/your friend like Mexican food, I recommend Cafe Coyote in Old Town -- we sampled a bunch of other places during our vacation but kept coming back there for tasty food, fast service, and enormous margaritas. (Caveat: my info is several years out of date, so hopefully they're still as good as I remember!)
