On Monday we drove form Kearny, NE to Denver. Tuesday we took off form driving to hang out in Denver.
Along the way to Denver we stopped a Pony Express Station. It was tiny hut in the middle of park. I bought a postcard and poster. It was nice break.
We had lunch in the middle of nowhere at spot called Lucy's Place, which R found with internet research. It looked very rundown outside but was clean inside and food was good. I had bison burger with bison form the ranch. R had the special which was chicken and noodles over mashed potatoes -- it came with salad and dessert.
We couldn't find a rest stop so stopped at walmart to use the bathroom and refill our water.
We got to Denver mid-afternoon. We couldn't check into our hotel for a bit so we followed signs pointing to "book sale" and found a warehouse full of books. Everything was half off I bought a few things, mostly comics.
The we checked in. The door of the 1st room they gave us wouldn't open, so we had to get a different room.
We headed downtown and had dinner at veggie restaurant called City O City which a friend had rec'ed me. I had Udon and R had a kidney bean Waffle.
After dinner we walked around down town. There is pedstratin mall with only transit allowed on 16th st. It was ok, lots of people where out even though it was cold but most the stores where chains and not that fun to window shop. We did by some chocolates which where decent though. After walking for a while we took the free mall shutte back to near the car. We then got a bit confused about directions -- we where at the intersection of two grids and we ended up on the wrong one, so we had and extra long walk and where quite tried when we got back to the car.
The next day (Tuesday) we went to the Nature and Science Museum. There were lots of dioramas, and some live lizards and snakes. There was fun interactive exhibit on how water makes channels with lots of wet sand that we played with for a while. The top of the museum had a great view of the city.
We had lunch at a place called Skoops. I had sandwich with goat cheese and pear and and ice cream cone.
After lunch we went to the Botanic Garden which was nice. I was fairly tried (I think the altitude was getting to me) so we sat down a lot. Luckily there where lots of pretty places to sit. There where was special exhibit of bamboo sculptures, included several floating in ponds.
After that we didn't want to go back to the hotel before dinner so we hung out in park for a while. I read. It was nice to just sit for a bit.
We had dinner at place called Phat Thai, that was thai-ish we had shared a spring roll, the I had tofu balls in coconut broth -- the broth was really really good, and sticky rice for desert. After dinner we strolled around the neighborhood the restaurant was in. It's called cherry Creek and I thought it was neat. There where a fair number of mixed use buildings and
lots interesting shops and things. The street-scape was nice too. There where wide sidewalks and benches and lots of outdoor eating.
Today was mostly just driving through Wyoming, which is very beautiful. We are staying in a small town almost in Utah. We had dinner at hole in the wall Mexican place which was good.
