Here's some thoughts on things I've been reading and watching recently.
Dialect and Nationalism in China, 1860-1960 by Gina Anne Tam— I loved this book about the history of Chinese languages! The book argues that there are two competing stories about the diversity of languages, one that having a national language will unify the people, and one that local languages are authentic and their diversity is a strength. Tam shows how both of these stories have evolved over time, and how both tie into nationalist narratives. My one complaint about this book is that the poor print quality of the figures made some of them hard to read. This was a great book that really helped me understand the historical connections between classical Chinese and modern Chinese languages and also the current debates about contemporary langues. I live tweeted this book Here
Sun-Daughters, Sea-Daughters by Aimee Ogden— I really enjoyed this little mermaid inspired science fiction novella. It has cool worldbuilding with complex politics that the reader only glimpses, characters with complex interpersonal relationships, and good people trying their best. (Content note: plague)
Hilda season 2— I finally watched the second season of this children's cartoon featuring a girl exploring, meeting strange creatures and having adventures. She encounters all kinds of fun things: Ghost pirates, time travel, librarians! I really enjoyed Hilda’s relationships with her friends and her mother. This is such a nice show!
Link Click — My group started watching this doughua featuring time travel via photos, and I’m really liking it so far. The stories are very emotionally engaging and intense. I really enjoy that all the stories so far have had an element of urban rural connection. Also the art is lovely!
Wing Chun (1994)— I’ve been wanting to watch this martial arts movie starting Michelle Yeoh for a while. It was hard to track down and I finally resorted to buying a used DVD which then sat in my house for months unwatched. But I finally watched it. The fight featuring Michelle Yeoh protecting a platter of tofu was great! There were a bunch of other fun fights too. The energy between Michelle Yeoh’s character and the woman that she rescues was surprisingly shippy. Overall a very fun movie.
