The subway serves the same clarifying purpose here in NYC. Stations tend to be at major commercial streets that are also gentrification targets, and over the last eight years of riding the 3 train I've watched as white people started getting on/off the train at Franklin Ave, then at Nostrand Ave, then at Utica Ave. It used to be I was often the only white person who stayed on the train past Eastern Parkway (I even remember seeing someone's tweet about "Holy shit, I saw a white person on the 3 train" and thinking they might have seen me!) but that's very much not true anymore.
