There are several big freeway projects getting built along here with stimulus money. On the other hand bus service just got some very drastic cuts. So thank you federal government for continuing do invest in suburbia and disinvest in the center city. I know that's been the mode of action since the New Deal, but still I had hoped we would have learned better by now.
Just to make this bit more clear. There are lots environmental reasons why compact cities are good. Also there are class and race issues going on here. Suburbia tends to be whiter and richer then the center city. This is in part due past government programs: hello FHA redlining.
