I've been saying I'll do short fiction rec post for a while now. So here it is. I've mostly finished with the short stories I wanted to read, though I keep coming across other people recs, so I may update this. I'm not very good at explaining what short stories are about and why I like them without spoiling anything, but I'll try to provide a few notes for each.

My very favorites:

"Loss, with Chalk Diagrams" by E. Lily Yu (Short Story) Link goes to podcast as the text is no longer online. A beautiful and sad story about friendship and loss.

"Found" by Alex Dally MacFarlane Short Story. Alex Dally MacFarlane is an author I discovered this year, who I'm going to be looking out for in the future. (I'm also excited for her new column on tor.com about non-gender binary SFF.) Anyways I really like the worldbuilding in this story and how spices are linked to places and feelings.

"The Witches of Athens" By Lara Elena Donnelly (short story) Oh so I read this story because the title evoked The Witches of Karres, but it is nothing like that. It's not about Athens Greece but rather, Athens, Ohio. It's about women with differences working together, and also love.

"The Weight of a Blessing" by Aliette de Bodard (short story) I love everything she writes. This one is about a mother daughter relationship and memory.

"The Waiting Stars" by Aliette de Bodard (Novelette) Also amazing!

"A Heap of Broken Images" by Sunny Moraine in We see a Different Frontier Edited by Fabio Fernandes and Djibril al-Ayad. (short story?) This story is both burial and hopeful. (content note:genocide)

Also Good and Worth Reading:

All the stories in We see a Different Frontier:A Postcolonial Speculative Fiction Anthology Edited by Fabio Fernandes and Djibril al-Ayad. Seriously all of these are great, and the whole anthology works really well together.

"The Sea Witch Sets The Record Straight" by Ursula Vernon (Short story) A Retelling of the Little Mermaid form the Sea Witch's point of view.

"Armistice Day" by Marissa Lingen (short story) I'm not sure this story was supposed to make me think of house elves, but it did, in a good way.

The Litigation Master and the Monkey King by Ken Liu (Novelette) A story about the importance of history.

"Homecoming" by Susan Palwick (Novelette)

"Significant Figures" By Rachael Acks (short story) A silly story about a waffle iron, maths, and family.

"Din Ba Din" By Kate MacLeod (short story) A story about trying to change your future.

"The Ministry of Changes" by Marissa K. Lingen (short story) I love the role of the protagonists family and community plays in this story.

"Never Dreaming (In Four Burns)" by Seth Dickinson A story about heredity prion disease, and the beauty of the scientific method.

"Hiding on the Red Sands of Mars" By Anaea Lay (short story)

"Silent Bridge, Pale Cascade" by Benjanun Sriduangkaew (short story)

"The Troll (A Tale Told Collectively)" by Marissa Lingen (short story) Family story telling.

"Boat in Shadows, Crossing By Tori Truslow" (Novelette) Lovely worldbuilding.
