Recipe Party and Marriage License
Jun. 11th, 2012 04:11 pmAside: Your responses to my Vegetarian Sandwiches post have been making me hungry. Thanks for all the great ideas.
So yesterday R's mom threw us a Recipe Party (somewhat in lieu of a shower -- since I'm anti-stuff I thought this was a great idea). How it worked was that people where asked to show up with a recipe rather then a present. Not very many people ended up attending,(the invite having been sent out quite late) but it was lovely to see the people who did should up. Some of which where old friends I had not seen in a while, and some of which where R's old family friends who I was pleased to meet. My niece got to play in the creek and very much enjoyed herself. R'm mom served massive amounts of cheese, much of which did not get eaten and is thus still in the house.
As well as people who attended the party bringing recipes many people who could not attend sent them. I'm quite excited to have lots new recipes to try.
Today we when to get our marriage license! I was bit nervous go in, as the license makes it offical. We got lucky and found a free parking space about a block form the clerks office, which is in a part of town that it hard to park in. The people there where very helpful. We filled out a paper form, then a computer form. I worried a bit that I'd miss spell someone's name, and we had to call R's mom and ask her what state she was born in. However the paperwork was fairly simple and went by quickly. After that was done they gave us and number at told us to wait. After waiting less then a minute we where called up to talk to the clerk. She looked at our ids, asked if we are planning to change our names (we are both keeping our names, but it's nice to know that our state allows either or both people getting married to change their name as part of the process). The R paid with shinny $100 bill.
They gave us the license to be signed when our marriage is "solemnized", a pretty but legally meaningless certificate, and a health booklet. The health booklet starts out talking about basic health care: Brush your teeth, see a doctor regally, then it has section on domestic violence, then one on STD's, and then a lot about family planning and pregnancy. Apparently the state requires that it be given to couples applying for a marriage license.
Afterwards we went had a ice cream sundae at Ben and Jerry's to celebrate. I felt happy and relived. Its a big step, and it was simple and straight forward.

Date: 2012-06-14 12:30 pm (UTC)I'm sorry I totally failed to provide any recipes. I'm afraid I don't think there's any chance we'll be able to come to the wedding, either -- we really wanted to, but it's a bad time for us to try to get to California, but we hope to visit you another summer.

Date: 2012-06-14 05:21 pm (UTC)In California it's not quite anyone who can perform a marriage -- one has to be either registered clergy or hold certain legal offices. (Of course it is quite easy to fulfill these criteria, and there are regions that allow clergy to register online, or one can deputize someone for a day for about $120.)
