I just finished Bitter Medicine as well! It was nice to read an urban fantasy/paranormal romance where the Eastern and Western magical beings were equally weighted in the worldbuilding. The present tense usage in a non-fanfic work took me a little while to adjust to, as usual, but the fact it was nominally set in my hometown more than balanced that out.

Re: New Life Begins, I did think it picked up again towards the end, and the last episode really brings it back to all the female relationships, but it's not one of those shows that is So Amazing I feel the need to heavily encourage people to push through. (Iirc, there was something about how he was really only using the rumor of torture, but I wasn't paying super close attention to that arc and it was a while ago.)
