2022 was not a great year for me writing wise. I have been dealing with tendonitis in my right wrist for over a year now. It's harder to write when I'm in pain. Several things that I used to do to help write no longer work. I'm slowly learning ways to work around it but that is taking some time.

I once again wrote both criticism and fanfic. I’m going to talk about each separately.

Criticism
2022 was the first year I was an editor at Lady Business! I wrote two long posts there. First Fanfic Research Methods: A Case Study where I talked about how I research for the fic I write and give advice about researching for fiction writing. Later in the year I wrote Short and Sweet: Collections and Anthologies a rec list of collections and anthologies. Short and Sweet is my irregularly occurring short SFF column and it was nice to get back to that. I also contributed to numerous group posts.

I also wrote up some notes about what I've learned from reading Letters & Epistolary Culture in Early Medieval China by Antje Richte. I hope that helps people have fun writing historically accurate letters.

Finally in terms of criticism I recced a thing everyday for the month of December! That was a lot of fun.

FanFic
I also wrote some fic. I posted three things on AO3 for a total of 22,563 words.

With Your Road so Long and Difficult (The Untamed, gen, 3426 words) At one point I had planned to write a whole CQL space AU with plot and stuff. That project didn't work out but I had posted a few short pieces. I was a little sad that I hadn't written the burial mounds sediment days part of the AU. One morning it occurred to me that I could just write that bit. So I did.

My Very Own Star (Word of Honor, teen, 15102 words) My Word of Honor Howl's Moving Castle AU! I worked on this on and off for almost a year. I was struck by many similarities between the two sources but getting them to fit well together was a challenge. I'm pleased with how it came out in the end!

Suibian Reads (The Untamed, gen, 4035 words) I wasn't planning on writing anything after My Very Own Star but I was thinking about different formats for stories and wondered if I could write a story in the form of book reviews. The more I thought about it the more fun it sounded, so I tried it. It was incredibly fun! I got to have opinions about books and use some fic ideas that I like but am not planning to write as the basis for many of the made up books.

I wish I had been able to write more in 2022, but I’m happy with the things I did write. I hope that in 2023 I can continue to find more ways to work around my tendonitis and write a bit more than I did last year.

I hope you find ways around your tendonitis that allow you more creativity as well!

Loved the part of your Space AU that I read and somehow didn't realize there were others in the series so I look forward to checking those out.

Also hoping you'll be able to work around the tendonitis and write as much as you want in 2023!

I like unconventional fic formats. A story in the form of book reviews is really fun! I like imagining reading some of the made up books and wondering if I'd have the same thoughts as Wei Wuxian :D

I'm so sorry that pain is keeping you from doing the things you want to do. I'm very familiar with that, and I commiserate.

*hugs*

Congrats on your output under such difficult circumstances! I hope the tendonitis will get better or that you find better ways to deal with it so that it doesn’t hinder you so much in writing!
