forestofglory: Cup of tea on a pile of books (books)

Media round ups are where I talk about things I've been reading an watching recently, so here's some recent media.

A Summer Beyond Your Reach by Xia Jia— This Xia Jia’s, a Chinese science fiction writer, first collection in English. I’ve read many of her stories online and knew I liked her work, so I backed this on Kickstarter years ago. It’s been sitting on my ereader for a while, but recently I was in the right mood to start it. It’s very good! There are some of my old favorites here, but also a bunch of stories I hadn’t read before, many that hadn’t been published in English before.

Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)— I loved this! It's a story that centers a mother daughter relationship! The multiverse stuff is wacky and fun! There’s a lot of action inspired by martial arts movies. Michelle Yeoh was great! The whole thing is extremely my jam!

City of Marvel and Transformation: Chang'an and Narratives of Experience in Tang Dynasty China by Linda Rui Feng— This book turned out to be as much about stories about Chang’an as it was about the city itself. But I’m interested in both of those things, so it worked out. It's clearly part of a very active historical discussion about Tang lit and also the history of the civil service exams. So reading it felt a bit like coming into a conversion that has been going on for a long time and trying to understand it.

Girls' Last Tour 4-6 by Tsukumizu— This manga mostly about daily life while wandering in a post-apocalyptic wasteland continued to give me an odd mix of feelings. The ending was bittersweet.

Beryl and Sapphire episodes 24- 42— I’ve been watching this at a much slower pace as I and the people I watch it with keep being busy during our watch slot. This continues to be a whole bunch of stories mixed together, many of which are very sweet but some of which are sad or scary. It’s also more openly queer than any produced in mainland China now. We are a bit more than halfway through the show. It's not as confusing and there are several storylines that come back that I look forward to.

All the Horses of Iceland by Sarah Tolmie— This novella about a trader from Iceland who travels to central asain to trade for horses. There are fantasy elements but its clearly based in specific real time and place (or places). I did not love the historically accurate slavery. However I did love how much material culture detail was in this!

Furari by Jirō Taniguchi— A manga about a man in 1700’s Edo, who is interested in surveying. This mostly about him wandering around looking at the city, very quiet and soothing
