Recently on twitter Alexandra Rowland wrote a thread about recing someone there first fantasy novel. The thread had a lot good advice but what caught my eye was Rowland’s description of fantasy as a language. That reminded me of Jo Walton’s piece about SF reading protocols. I think it's super valuable to remember that you have to learn how to read SFF, but also that SFF takes on non-SFF works can get you to some strange places.

I disappeared down the rabbit hole, because Jo Walton's piece had a link to a Making Light discussion, and, and, and...

Good timing - just recently my parents told me that one of their friends had become interested in fantasy novels and which book to buy them for his birthday, because they know I read a lot of fantasy. But the books he mentioned are not at all the fantasy genre I read! (epic high fantasy - it's been a while.) I was planning to look for something that might suit, but in the meantime my dad already bought a book I've talked about before that I love but is quite different, I'm really curious if he'll like it.
