I’m still abuzz from watching the live stream of the Hugo Awards ceremony yesterday! It was at noon my time and watched it while chatting with friends online, and it was amazing. The first award given out was the Campbel Award for Best New Writer Jeannette Ng won and she opened her speech by yelling “Joseph Campell was a fucking fasisict” ended with “my hat does cool thing let me show you.” This was basically everything I want in Hugo Award Acceptance speeches! Political as hell, reexamining the history of the genre while demanding to be seen as part of it, plus an awesome hat! (The text of her speech is here) So that was a great start to the night.

My friends at [community profile] ladybusiness won for best fanzine! Its so well deserved and they are all amazing! But also they thanked me form the stage! For being the short fiction and motherhood correspondent! (And maybe something else I was pretty overwhelmed at the time and didn’t take it all in. If the text of the speech goes up I will link it here.)

There were so many other good speeches too! I was super pleased that Zen Cho won! And Likhain! I’ve been following both of their carriers for ages and its nice to see then rewarded. And AO3 won! Here’s that
speech
(with pictures of the rocket!) And the Lodestar has name now! (I’m still looking for pictures of the physical award they gave out - if you see some send them my way)

I’ve been voting in the hugos and watching the awards for a while not and I’m alway come away fired up about the potential of SFF and genre and fandom as a community. Sometimes we fail, I live through the puppy years after all, but to see so many people who believe we can create a better future is still deeply inspiring.

It was such a wonderful awards ceremony, and all the things you highlighted were the high points for me too. Huge congratulations for your own contribution to [community profile] ladybusiness — it's one of my favourite spaces on the internet, and your work is a large part of that.

Thanks for
