Recent Short SFF Recs
Nov. 29th, 2017 07:00 pmI've had good luck with a lot of my recent short fiction reading. After reading a bunch of work that just didn't click for me almost everything I've picked up in the last couple of weeks has been great.
"A Wound Like an Unplowed Field" by Max Wynne I enjoyed the nifty plant based magic in this story as well as the slow build up of trust between two prickly people.
"The Şiret Mask" By Marie Brennan A fun twisty heist story.
"The Secret Life of Bots" by Suzanne Palmer A fun story about a scrappy little robot that has very firm instructions to stay on task and not improvise.
“A Recipe for Magic,” by Kat Howard & Fran Wilde A story with baking and found family. Very sweet.
Temporary Duty Assignment by A.E. Ash This part of the Book Smuggers Novella initiative its hopeful post -apocalyptic setting with strong romance element. I thought it was charming. There’s also a prequel short story called "Nice" that’s free online.
It's getting to be the end of the year which means people are starting to talk about awards. A.C. Wise has posted her yearly What Have You Done? What Have You Loved? post which rounds up author eligibility posts and awards recommendation posts. This a great resource.
Also the rules have changed for Hugo nominations. If you would like to nominate 2017 work for the Hugos presented in 2018 you will need to be a member of the 2017 or 2018 worldcon by the end of December 2017.
