Recent Media: Much Tea
Jun. 2nd, 2019 11:28 amTitle because almost all of the these feature tea drinking.
Street Food This Netflix's new food documentary. R and watched the first episode and I found it frustratingly in between food porn and something more serious about socio-economics. Like the show mentions conflict between street vendors and the government over the use of the sidewalk. That’s really interesting I want to know more, in great detail even. Or they talked a little bit about the price of ingredients and the sale price, just enough to get me interested but not enough to really understand the issues. So I wish this was either pure food porn or a proper deep dive.
Gong Fu Tea|chA by Tea House Ghost茶館鬼 A series of short, 5-10 minutes, soothing videos about a Chinese tradition of tea making. I learned that tea pets are are a thing! This is delightful! I found these down a fanish rabbit hole but they seem like something a lot folks might enjoy.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Watching Star Trek: Discovery made me want to see more things featuring Michelle Yeoh, and I’ve recently been interested in Chinese media so R suggested that we rewatch this. I saw it in the theaters when it came out but not since. Anyways this featured many badass female characters, awesome fight scenes, and a plot that I did not like.
So much fanfiction! Before WisCon I loaded my ereader with fics from the Guardian 520 exchange and various other things from my marked for later selection on AO3. Despite several long flights and a some room breaks I did not get through all of this before I got back. There where many lovely fics which made my travels much more enjoyable.
Hilda This show made me go aww over paperwork. I didn't know that was possible. Hilda’s mum continues to be wonderful and there’s a librarian character who is delightful. I really hope they make more of this!
An Unexpected Invitation by Ceillie Simkiss -- an ace and aro witch gets an invitation to attend the wedding of two dear friends, but she has travel sickness and has to find a way to attend. This isn’t quite slice of life but it is gentle.
Otherworld Barbara by Moto Hagio -- This was recommended to me by
coffeeandink when I asked for manga recs a while ago. (I’m always happy to get more recs!) Surreal and creepy in a good way. This also stuck the landing, which this kind of thing often fails at. everything came together both in terms of the explanation of what was going on and being narratively satisfying. (content note: child death)
