Book Chatter: Various
Jul. 15th, 2013 07:36 pmI really enjoy it when people like books I recommend to them. A whole bunch of people in a online community I'm part of read Among Others because I said it was good -- and most of them really really liked it. And just recently some there read The Kappa Child by Hiromi Goto because I mentioned it had a badass queer lady as main character. She had mixed feelings about it, but it is still really pleasing to recommend books that people read. Really I'm major book pusher, but I don't just go around telling people to read whatever my favorite thing of the moment is, I try and recommend things people will like. If you recommend something the 1st time and they don't like that person will not trust you again.
I had to stop reading Life by Gwyneth Jones because it was upsetting me too much. One of the view point character is a female scientist and I just couldn't deal with the horrible sexism effecting her career stuff. It is too bad because it was good, just not something I could handle.
I'm just about done with my Hugo ballot -- there are a bunch of categories I am not voting but I read all the short fiction. It turned out that I wasn't willing to read the 5 most popular SF novels of the year though (even though I had already read 2 of them). The last few years I haven't been willing to read things because I ought to, and I just felt meh about the other books on the list. So I'm not voting in the novel category. I feel a bit weird about it. After all I paid money to vote, and now I'm deciding not to. I'm also not sure if I want to vote again. I think I enjoyed nominating more than I did voting.
