Seattle Trip Report
Jul. 9th, 2013 03:33 pmI just got back form a weekend trip to Seattle. I'd never been there before, and it was exciting for me to visit a new city. R went to go to a gaming convention, but I just went to see the city and see some friends there.
I did a lot of exploring on my own. We stayed near the airport, and there was a light rail from there to downtown. It was quite easy to take. So Friday morning I took the light rail into town and wandered around. It was fun to look at the city and see how it is put together. Pretend I was going to give a lecture about it latter and took lots of pictures. (My urban picture taking is totally inspired by the slides used in a class on the history of the American landscape which I audited, many of which where taken by the lecturer back in the 70's.) I also bought myself some delicious cake. Then I had lunch with a friend form high school who I had not seen in years. I had to walk fairly far get to there place which was ok -- but didn't realize that there would be hills. It was really nice to catch up. We went to the arboretum and wandered around looking at pretty trees. I was really tried when I got back to the hotel.
Saturday I went to Pikes Place Market. I was meeting some internet friends but I got there a bit before the appointed time I was meeting and wandered around a bit. Then I waited around near a statute of pig. Every now and again the people at the fish stall nearby would shout and then throw a fish! Then the people I was meeting showed up and we wandered around the market together. We had fresh fried donuts and they were soo good. And we played with all the toys in the toy shop. For lunch we had Koren rolls. I wish I been a little bit better at talking to them -- or at least tried to talk about books, but I ended up feeling rather shy.
For dinner that night R and I wanted to check a Kenyan restaurant in the Columbia City neighborhood, that he had researched. The food was only ok, but it was interesting,
and it was fun place to take a walk, and see more of the city. We got a bit lost one the way back so got to see even more.
Sunday morning I stayed in and relaxed -- I was rather tried form all the walking. In the afternoon R's con finished up and we went out together. We were took the monorail to the Seattle Center (a former world's fair site -- learning that made the monorail make much more sense) and went to the Chihuly exhibit and gardens. It was really great -- I just love Chihuly's glass. We still had a bunch of time before dinner so we went and checked out the EMP museum, it a pop culture museum that focuses on music but also has bit if SFF stuff. It turned out to be a bit of a disappointment. They had some neat things, but the curation was not very good. There wasn't much about why the items mattered, or even how they were connected to each other.
Anyways after that we went and had a very nice dinner.
We flew back on Monday. Over all it was really fun trip.
