Bits and Bobs

*"Bits and Bobs" is what I call my lots small unrelated things make a post posts. Feel free to comment on only one or two points.

*I've been having many thinky thoughts about DW culture and Tumblr and change but nothing that's solid yet. I've been in retrospective mood thinking about fandom and the past. I'm not quite in transformative works fandom though I've been adjacent to it for years. (I think I'm finally comfortable saying I'm in SFF fandom but for years I would have said I was fandom adjacent there too.) But I've been thinking about my fanish activity online now and it the past. I have really concluded anything. Maybe if I do I'll write a longer post

*Its been raining a lot here. I'm glad we missed out on the polar vortex though -- that looked way too cold. I'm hopeful that we will have another year of not a drought anyways.

*recently I've been trying to learn how to make egg-in-the-hole, you know toast with the egg cooked in it. Sometimes it works better than other times. Luckily it tastes fine even when the egg does go where I want it to go. I think the sliced bread we get is a bit too squishy and I want to get some more nice sourdough and try again with that.

This is the problem with just dashing stuff off about complex topics. I didn't mean to be self depreciating. If you asked me now I'd say I've been in SFF fandom for years, but I'm not really sure when I slipped over to feeling that way. Maybe when I started voting in the Hugos? I guess I haven't thought about it recently. Maybe I do need to write a long piece on different kinds of fanish activity and imposter syndrome and community.

I love egg in the hole under its many guises, and have also recently attempted to learn to actually make it rather than merely requesting other people make it for me. I tend to fry the bread in butter a bit first before adding the egg to get it crunchier.

I've been trying to fry the bread -- I've been getting it a little bit burnt though which is not ideal. Possibly I need to lower the heat a bit. I also like to fry up the missing piece of bread and using it to dip in the egg yolk.

Oooh yes about frying up the missing piece of bread. And yes, my frying is very hit-and-miss... really, almost all of my cooking is, but frying bread seems particularly variable, possibly due to the unpredictable moisture content of any given slice of bread. I am not a fan of sourdough myself but I do see how it might work better than the heavier multigrain loaf I tend to use.

mmmm... dense whole grain bread could be good too. It just needs to be a bit denser than the sliced sandwich bread. I might have to experiment with a few different things an see if I can get a better handle on it.
