Book chatter: recommendations

I've seen a couple of references lately to "books you always recommend." I like recommending books to people, but I don't always recommended the same books.
I used to enthuse about my latest find, but I found it didn't work, just because I loved something didn't mean other people would too. So after a couple of time of getting my favorites sent back with "meh" reviews, I've become more thoughtful about recommending. I try to recommend things for the specific person asking. I think about what else they like, style, tone, content. It's complex.
I also like recommending books for special requests(e.g "a book where...") it makes me think about the books I've read in a different light.
