Media Round Up: History, Comics and More!
May. 18th, 2022 10:56 amHere are some brief thoughts on things I've read or watched over the past month or so:
Making a Yellow River Delta: An Environmental Drama in Song Dynasty China by Ling Zhang— Wow this book! I could feel my brain making new connections while I was reading this. It feels a bit like when I read Nature's Metropolis There’s so much here about the interactions of states and the environment, governance, how historians understand failure and more. I'm going to be thinking about this for a long time
Magical Boy volume 1 by The Kao — graphic novel about a trans boy who learns he has inherited magical girl powers, and has to save the world. I liked this a lot, the art was fun and the characters were compelling. My only issue is that this ends on a cliffhanger and volume 2 won’t be out until later this year.
Jun Jiu Lingepisodes 8-20— I continue to enjoy how many complex women are in this show and that they talk to each other. On the other hand the show isn’t great about disabled people who mostly exist so that the main character can cure them. Though I’m finding the current story line (which features a plague) rather fraught. But over all its a good show and I'm looking forward to more. (Content note: past coherenced abortion)
Tale of the Drunken Sword by Jeannie Lin— Did you know Jeannie Lin has written a xianxia story? It was short but fun! I hope there are sequels to this eventually because I’d like to know more about these characters
Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) — R and I watched this because it's got Michelle Yeoh in it. She was great! Her character is better at the spy job than Bond, except that she got damested a couple of times. The rest of the movie was ok, I’m not really into James Bond and I was annoyed at the high background levels of sexual harasment.
Girls' Last Tour 1-3 by Tsukumizu— This is a slice of life manga about two young women wandering around in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Which seems like it shouldn’t work, but actually I found it sweet and charming.
After Hours, Vol. 1- 3 by Yuhta Nishio— This is a slice of life manga featuring and f/f couple. One of them is and experienced DJ and the other one wants to learn more about that scene. There was a lot of focus planning events at clubs. I found it hard to follow sometimes, but that may just be that I’m very unfamiliar with the milieu it's set in.
