Hugo Recs: Best Related Work
Feb. 11th, 2020 09:31 amThe best related work category covers nonfiction about SFF and fandom as well as community projects. So this category is really broad and often includes some disparate things. But I love all academic books, personal essays, and community crafts so it's a fun category for me.
So here's what's on my ballot so far:
The Dark Fantastic: Race and the Imagination from Harry Potter to the Hunger Games by Ebony Elizabeth Thomas --This very good book that is doing important work looking at racism in the media and in fandom.
The Raksura Colony Tree -- I didn’t make it to Worldcon last year but some of you shared pictures of this really cool project. I love trees and plants and also fiber arts so a tree made of fibers arts seems amazing to me!

renay -- So last year the AO3 won a Hugo which was amazing! Then the Mark Protection Committee was really mean about transformative fans celebrating the win and made a lot of people feel unwelcome. It really pissed me off that they got to be the official face of WSFS even though a lot of us disagreed with their actions and how they represented the community to other fans. It doesn’t seem like there is a lot we can do to hold the MPC accountable for their actions but I want to send a message that their behavior is not ok, so I’m nominating this brilliant and angry piece.
That’s all that I have on my ballot for now, though there's also a new biography of Joanna Russ that I might get around to reading before nominations close.
