Recent Media: Mmm ... Pretty Costumes
Jul. 17th, 2019 09:24 amI Ship My Adversary x Me I talked about this chinese boys love web novel a while back right when it went on break. But now there is a new chapter! Which was great. Its got a new translator and will be getting one chapter translated a month for now. It's about two actors who most of the fans think hate each other, but one of them finds out that some fans ship them and shenanigans occur. It it includes them feeding each other a lot. (Content note: embarrassing situations)
Frau Faust Vol. 1-5 by Kore Yamazaki This was reced to me a while back when I requested manga recs. (I'm working through them slowly but I'd love even more recs) I really enjoyed it. There’s an important mentor/student relationship, plus the main character is a mother. (content notes: graphic violence, child death)
The Trans Space Octopus Congregation: Stories by Bogi Takács -- so, as I mentioned earlier, I finished reading this but its not going to be out until fall so I will post a proper review then. It's very good though!
The Untamed eps 1- 8 So I have a list of shows to watch that haven’t made time for yet, plus I don’t tend to watch things before they are complete. But somehow I got sucked into watch this drama and I don’t regret it. I’m going to blame
spindizzy, who started watching the 1st episode, then got sucked into the novel and live tweeted the whole thing. This drama is very fun! Its over the top and dramatic, people wear pretty costumes, there are cool sword fights, pretty scenery, and lots of intense looks between characters.
So have read the novel that this is based on and it's interesting being able to see how things are different in the drama. My brain is like “everyone has faces now?” but actually since its story where everyone has too many names having faces makes it easier to keep track of people. I also like how the adaptation has made changes that mean the female characters get more screen time be awesome. The plot is quite a bit different though.
Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones -- sometimes I just need to reread some DWJ, I find her books very comforting.
The Strange Case of Starship Iris eps 4-10 I really enjoyed this! The characters were great. There’s a linguist character who just so enthusiastic about knowing stuff and gets to use linguistics to help solve problems. I love him. But then I loved everyone. The show has great found family vibe with all the characters working together and some great banter. It’s very well plotted with the mysteries that felt mysterious but also a payoff that felt earned.
I Was Their American Dream: A Graphic Memoir by Malaka Gharib -- This was about growing up Filipino and Egyptian in LA. It was super sweet and cute despite touching on some difficult topics.
Nirvana in Fire eps 14-18 There was a new years eve feast! Multiple fests held in different households! It was so great! All the food and awkward family dinners, yes! The political plotting continues to be interesting if hard to follow.
Unsung Heroine by Sarah Kuhn --f/f novella. I enjoyed the other Heroine Complex books, about Asian American superheroes, but this one was just cutting a bit too close to my embarrassment squick for me to really fully enjoy get into it.
