I've just bought train tickets for my trip to England latter this month. After putting it off for a long time, it was pretty simple and I think I got reasonable prices. (I paid about 40 pounds for two tickets.)

Now I have to figure out if I want to buy an oyster car for about 2 days in London.

I have a spare oyster I could lend you once you get to mine, though obviously you've then got the Heathrow-->here leg on a "proper ticket"...

I thought you could return your Oyster card and get back any unused balance and the £5 deposit you pay for it? Might be worth asking at a Tube station when you get here.

One day travelcards are available to buy in advance, as are special visitor oyster cards; http://visitorshop.tfl.gov.uk/ I've always found travelcards the cheaper option when touristing in London but it depends entirely on how much you'll be using the tube and which zones.
