*I have been reading some kidfic, fanfic where the characters take care of kids, and I have come to the conclusion that most of it is about the fantasy of having really good parents, and not about the reality or even the fantasy of being a parent.

I think that's a pretty insightful summary, and also why it doesn't do much for me, though I don't hate it. (My parents were . . . fine? It's not a stage of my life I feel any particular pull to either relive or re-do.)
